Three brothers from a luxury real estate family have each been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison, but their legal problems are nowhere near finished.
Oren, Alon, and Tal Alexander were found guilty in Manhattan federal court of sex trafficking and related charges that prosecutors called crimes of extraordinary magnitude. On Tuesday, a judge gave each of them 30 years behind bars. Two of the brothers still have a separate criminal trial waiting in Florida, and all three are being sued in dozens of civil cases.
The Federal Case and Sentencing
A Manhattan jury convicted the brothers earlier this year. Prosecutors said the men drugged and sexually assaulted women over many years. The federal case focused on a sex trafficking conspiracy.
At the sentencing hearing, each brother received the same 30-year prison term. Those convictions and sentences close one part of the story but open the door to more court dates ahead.
Florida Criminal Charges Still Pending
The twins, Oren and Alon, both 39, still face state charges in Florida. Prosecutors there have charged them with sexual assault and battery connected to three alleged incidents between 2016 and 2021.
One 2016 case involves both brothers and a woman in their Miami Beach condo. The other two cases name only Oren and involve alleged assaults in 2017 and 2021. Now that the federal case is finished, Florida authorities can push for the twins to come back and face those charges.
Civil Lawsuits Across Multiple States
On top of the criminal cases, the brothers are facing more than two dozen civil lawsuits from women who say they were drugged and assaulted. At least 25 of those suits were filed in New York courts alone. Tal and Oren are named in nearly 20 cases, while Alon faces around 15.
The federal convictions give the women who sued a stronger position as they try to collect damages from whatever money and property the brothers still have. Those civil cases are expected to drag on for years.
