On April 15, FBI agents escorted Lancaster Vice Mayor Marvin Crist and City Councilmember Raj Malhi from their homes at gunpoint. Agents also searched Lancaster City Hall and the home of a Bel-Air developer during the operation.

Sources familiar with the investigation say the probe focuses on whether Crist and Malhi received money or other benefits from BYD, the China-based electric car and bus maker operating America’s largest electric bus factory in Lancaster.

The federal search warrant specifically sought evidence of “anything of value” provided by BYD, directly or indirectly, to elected officials, candidates, or political action committees.

Agents were also looking for information on government actions that the company sought or influenced.

Investigation Covers Several Years of Activity

The probe spans from 2018 to the present and includes a review of financial transactions, political contributions, and government decisions involving BYD.

Agents seized documents, phones, computers, and other electronic devices from the locations searched.

BYD has made significant investments in Lancaster, including the construction of a large electric bus factory that employs more than 750 people. The company supplies electric buses to Lancaster’s public fleet and several other cities in California.

No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed against the two officials. Neither Crist nor Malhi responded to requests for comment. Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris stated he was unaware of any wrongdoing and described the officials as “honorable.”

National Security Concerns Add to the Scrutiny

The investigation comes amid growing concerns about BYD, which has faced criticism over potential national security risks stemming from its Chinese origins. Some U.S. lawmakers have called for stricter restrictions on Chinese automakers, citing concerns about surveillance capabilities in their vehicles.

According to the Department of Justice, one of the deceased and disgraced financier’s prison guards acted very suspiciously in the days leading up to the infamous murder suicide.

Investigators say the prison guard, who was in charge of Epstein’s unit, deposited $5,000 in cash into his bank account about 10 days before the inmate was found deceased. In November of 2019, Chase Bank flagged the deposits as “suspicious activity” and filed a report. Investigators found out that the $5,000 deposit was only the tip of the iceberg.

About 11 other large cash deposits were made into Tova Noel’s bank account. The first time this type of cash was deposited into the account was in December of 2018. In total, Noel made $11,880 in deposits. Noel just started working in Epstein’s unit weeks before the death.

While Noel should’ve been doing rounds every 30 minutes to check on Epstein and other inmates, she was instead browsing online. An investigation into her internet search history that night revealed Noel was shopping online for furniture. At around 5:42 A.M., she googled “latest on Epstein in jail.” Then, at 5:52 A.M., she allegedly searched for the same thing again. Eerily, Epstein was discovered deceased less than 40 minutes later.

Interestingly, the prison guard told FBI agents that she doesn’t remember looking up or Googling the inmate.

While nothing has been confirmed, an internal FBI briefing that was later released showed the agency suspected Noel might be the mysterious orange shape that’s spotted on the surveillance cam near Epstein’s cell that night. The report suggests that the blurry officer provided linens and extra inmate clothing to the unit, which were likely used by Epstein to finalize his story. No one has been able to clearly identify the blob, despite it being a huge source of debate within the FBI and the public.

Ultimately, Tova Noel was fired after the horrible incident. She was also arrested for falsifying records to claim she had checked on Epstein throughout the night of his suicide, but those charges were later dropped.

Falsifying Records as a Correctional Officer

In New York, correctional officers have historically faced serious, felony-level charges for falsifying records. When falsifying records leads to coverups for violent incidents like assaults, murders, or suicides, then the charges can result in up to 20 years in federal prison. Correctional officers can also face similar penalties if falsifying records leads to a coverup of misconduct, like not actually conducting rounds as is required.

On top of criminal consequences, these officers typically lose their jobs and whatever pensions, or retirement are associated with their position. In some cases, especially when convictions occur, the person can be permanently disqualified from working in law enforcement.

If you’ve been accused of falsifying records or committing another type of offense as a correctional officer, then it’s important to hire legal representation as soon as possible. Contact our office now to schedule a free consultation.

According to the governor, the suspect is in custody, but he is not being cooperative with investigators. He has not confessed to the crime. In contrast, Robinson’s family, friends, and romantic partner are all cooperating with the FBI in its investigation. The governor also confirmed the ongoing rumors that Robinson’s housemate and boyfriend identifies as transgender going from male to female. He further stated that this fact may or may not be tied to the motive, which police are still working to uncover.

During the interview, the governor also stated that Robinson regularly entertained leftist ideology that left him “deeply indoctrinated.” The 22-year-old grew up in a conservative household but had a very different perspective from his family.

Friends and family members told authorities that Robinson had become increasingly political over the past few years.

Governor Cox implied that social media and algorithms likely played a massive role in “radicalizing” and “indoctrinating” the suspect. In the interview, he went on to explain how social media directly impacts the younger generation and has become a “cancer” over the past decade.

Robinson was arrested after a few details emerged. For one, he implied involvement in the shooting to a family member. The family member reached out to a friend who then told the police about the incriminating statement. What’s more, Robinson’s father later identified him in FBI photographs of the suspect.

A family member also spoke to authorities and confirmed that they had directly spoken to the suspect about Charlie Kirk coming to the university. During the conversation, Robinson said that Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate.

Utah is a state that utilizes capital punishment, meaning it’s possible for Robinson to get sentenced to the death penalty as a result of his actions.

How to Handle Criminal Charges and an Arrest

Right now, Robinson has made the decision not to cooperate with authorities. As of September 17th, Robinson has not hired an attorney, and a lawyer has not yet been assigned to represent him. Robinson appeared in an initial hearing via videolink. He was wearing an anti-suicide vest and did not speak at all other than to state his name for the court.

Robinson has been charged with felony aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. During this hearing, prosecutors stated they intend to pursue the death penalty.

If you ever get arrested, then your best move is to hire a lawyer regardless of the severity of your charges. It’s never a good idea to face criminal charges without a legal advocate, especially if you’re potentially facing consequences like the death penalty or life in prison.

According to reports, the arrest occurred right outside of the federal immigration court, and it happened as Lander attempted to accompany a third-party out of the courtroom. The person that Lander was attempting to escort out of the building was also arrested.

Reports show that Lander was observing immigration court hearings throughout the morning prior to the arrest. Witnesses later told reporters and police that Lander specifically stated that his intention was to “accompany” some of the immigrants out of the building.

Sure enough, when an immigrant Lander suspected might be targeted by ICE was released from court, ICE agents approached him. Lander was standing arm-in-arm with the immigrant and refused to separate from him.

Just prior to being arrested, the witness’s video footage shows agents attempting to physically separate Lander and the other man. One of the agents yelled at Lander, “You’re obstructing,” but that didn’t stop him from continuing to stay close to the immigrant. As Lander was being handcuffed, he told the officers that they didn’t have the authority to arrest US citizens. He also asked for a warrant. As he continued to protest, he was led down the hallway by an agent wearing a “federal agent” vest.

Many of the other officers involved in the arrest were in plainclothes, wearing only masks over their faces.

What Are Your Rights as an Immigrant in New York?

New York City is considered a sanctuary city because local and state laws generally prohibit law enforcement from targeting, arresting, or detaining individuals exclusively based on their immigration status or alleged civil immigration violations. Law enforcement officers are not authorized to ask about immigration status or enforce immigration laws.

All that said, ICE agents enforce federal laws, so they are completely separate from state and local law enforcement. ICE agents are legally authorized to make arrests for immigration violations.

That said, if you are currently an immigrant residing in New York, then it’s important to understand your rights. New York’s Protect Our Courts Act (POCA) exempts certain parties from being arrested while going to or returning from a court proceeding. Depending on the specifics of the case above, it might be possible for the arrested immigrant to have some form of recourse.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, then don’t hesitate to reach out to a lawyer who can help. The right legal advocate will ensure you completely understand your rights and legal options. They’ll advocate for you, advise you on how to proceed, and fight for the best possible legal outcome.

The duo plans on creating a coordinated effort led by the FBI and the Nassau Police Department to specifically go after New York state’s alleged Medicaid fraud involving Nassau University Medical Center.

The healthcare organization is alleging that New York state has illegally and unfairly withheld over $1 billion in Medicaid funds over the past 20 years by refusing to pay out valid insurance claims.

The state’s refusal to pay out these valid claims could be, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi, a violation of federal Medicaid laws and an intentional breach of contract with the federal government.

After looking into the situation, it’s clear that these allegations have been ongoing for a long time. The Nassau Health Care Corporation, which oversees the hospital, decided to initiate a lawsuit last year regarding the situation. The lawsuit names Nassau County Interim Finance Authority as being grossly negligent in handling the hospital’s claims. NIFA reportedly assumed financial control of the medical center in 2020 but failed to acknowledge the widespread Medicaid fraud and reduced aid were creating a financially distressing situation for both the hospital and some of the patients.

Now, the company additionally believes they are being retaliated against.

Facing Fraud Charges in New York

Under the law in New York, fraud is defined as falsely representing facts by conduct or words that are misleading or in a way that conceals relevant information that should be disclosed. Fraud is deliberate, and Medicaid fraud happens when someone intentionally misrepresents their situation in order to receive monetary benefits through the Medicaid program.

Some of the most common forms of Medicaid fraud are phantom billing, upcoding, unbundling services, arranging kickback agreements, double billing, patient identity theft, prescription drug fraud, and misrepresenting qualifications.

Medicaid fraud is taken very seriously in New York. Each individual violation could lead to up to 10 years in prison. If the fraud led to a serious bodily injury for a patient, then the violation could result in up to 20 years in prison. Each violation could also result in fines of up to $250,000 for individuals and $500,000 for organizations.

If you’re a healthcare provider, then you will likely have your medical license suspended or revoked entirely. You might also face mandatory supervision requirements and more stringent reporting requirements. You might also be excluded from participating in the Medicaid program for a minimum of five years depending on the nature of your specific violation. Unfortunately, a conviction often leads other private insurance companies to also terminate contracts with your organization.

The best way to avoid all these consequences is to prevent a Medicaid fraud conviction. A solid lawyer can help you navigate your situation and help you minimize the fallout from facing charges.

Mayor Eric Adams was indicted in September and accused of committing bribery, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. Prosecutors alleged that they had proof that the Mayor personally directed his aides to solicit foreign donations, despite foreign nationals from being able to legally contribute to U.S. election campaigns under federal law. While he’s been dealing with these criminal allegations, he’s also remained in power.

According to the current administration, the Mayor’s ongoing case has “unduly restricted” his ability to fully devote his time and attention to the illegal immigration and violent crime crisis. The Trump administration has noted their priority is to secure law and order, and in order to facilitate this, they’ve opted to order federal prosecutors to drop the case completely.

The memo in question ordered prosecutors not to take any additional steps until after the next election.

One assembly member who will also go up against the current mayor in the next election, Zohran Mamdani, has publicly questioned whether Adams possibly secured a deal with the Trump administration considering Adam’s recent behavior. Reports suggest that Adams has demonstrated a willingness to rescind previous sanctuary policies in his city and crack down on illegal immigration.

Now, the top prosecutor in charge of the case against Adams has decided to resign after refusing to comply with the Justice Department order. Two more senior Justice Department officials also made the decision to quit. So far, the mayor’s criminal case hasn’t been dropped. Attorney General Pam Bondi made a public statement that the matter will be investigated in the coming days.

Securing Justice in Your Case

Traditionally, the Justice Department makes decisions based on the facts and circumstances surrounding unique cases, allowing their judgments to be based on evidence, the law, and facts. This recent decision to dismiss the charges due to political considerations rather than the strength or weakness of the evidence has signaled “alarm”.

Justice is not a respecter of persons, which means the law should be applied equally in every case regardless of the suspect’s alleged social status, wealth, power, or prestige.

If you’ve recently been charged with a crime and you want to ensure justice is served, then your best option is to hire a criminal defense attorney who can help advocate for you. The right lawyer will be able to leverage their understanding of the law, experience, and skills to ensure you get a fair shot at justice. A good attorney will also consider different legal strategies that could lead to a more favorable outcome in your case.

Brian Thompson was the CEO of United Healthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group.

Suddenly, Thompson was fatally shot, and the shooter fled away.

Almost immediately, authorities rushed out to the scene and discovered that Thompson was deceased. Police quickly found additional ammunition around the scene. On the bullets, the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose,” were written in black marker. Police also discovered video footage of the suspect who appeared to flee away on bike, foot, and then by bus.

Authorities also discovered a discarded water bottle at the scene. Police who reviewed security video quickly determined that the shooter intended to kill Thompson. They noticed that the shooter specifically appeared to wait for Thompson before approaching him from behind and shooting him multiple times. Many other people passed the shooter and walked around him, so it seems the shooter was specifically after Thomspon.

The FBI called the attack premeditated and preplanned.

Detectives recovered a fingerprint and evidence that was sent for DNA testing. Then, on December 9th at around 9:14 A.M., authorities in Pennsylvania received a tip about a man matching the suspect’s description eating at a public McDonalds. Authorities rushed out and took the person, 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, into police custody. Upon being arrested, the suspect was carrying a firearm that’s believed to be the same weapon that was used in the CEO shooting.

Initially, the FBI believed that Thompson was targeted as a personal vendetta tied to the company, but it’s been determined that the suspect wasn’t insured by United Healthcare. It was discovered, however, that the suspect did suffer a painful “life-altering injury” to his back. Police are currently investigating to determine if this back injury played a role in the shooting.

When the suspect was arrested, he was also found to be carrying handwritten documents. In these letters, he reportedly writes, “These parasites simply had it coming,” and he also allegedly wrote about targeting the CEO.

Even more concerning, the suspect appears to have dropped off socially right before the attack. His mother reported him missing on November 18th, two weeks before the killing, because she had not spoken to her son since July. When his phone eventually became disconnected and he stopped posting to social media, his mother was worried something terrible had happened.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

Despite all the publicity surrounding this case and the alleged evidence collected against the culprit, it’s important to always remember that the suspect is considered innocent until they’re proven guilty.

Like everyone else accused of a crime, this suspect will have the opportunity to defend himself against the charges set forth against him. He should hire an attorney who can help him identify his best path forward. Here at NY Criminal Defense, we can help you determine your best legal options no matter how dire your situation may seem.

Jeffery Epstein and his alleged criminal activity over the years garnered so much attention from the public that it’s not that hard to believe that the perpetrator took his life back in August of 2019 before he could face trial for his actions.

The loss of life is always tragic, so it’s important to get to the bottom of what happened and why Epstein was able to take his life when he should’ve been under police supervision based on the circumstances of his imprisonment.

Ongoing investigations into what happened that night have come to ahead as the Justice Department recently released a report that outlines the egregious failures of the Manhattan federal prison workers. The report goes so far as to recommend criminal charges for some of the Manhattan federal prison workers.

The report says that Epstein was able to keep extra linens in his cell. He was also unsupervised because the surveillance cameras inside his units didn’t operate correctly. Epstein was also left alone in his cell instead of being assigned a cellmate.

At around 10:40 PM on August 9th, prison guards checked on Epstein. He wasn’t checked on again until eight hours later, where he was found deceased. All of this transpired after Epstein had already previously been placed on suicide watch and had already attempted to kill himself before.

Clearly, several mistakes were made along the way, as prison guards should have reasonably known that Epstein could attempt to take his life again.

Is There Legal Recourse for Families after a Wrongful Death or Rights Violation in Prison?

The Jeffrey Epstein case has remained notorious and relevant throughout the years, so at initial glance, this report might not seem like that big of a deal. After all, most of us have known for years that the jailers were negligent when it comes to keeping up with Epstein. Despite that, this finding could be crucial for the loved ones of Epstein who are hoping to seek out justice of their own.

Since the guard’s negligence and misconduct directly lead to Epstein’s untimely death, it might be possible for the surviving loved ones of Jeffery Epstein to seek out a wrongful death claim against the negligent correction officers.

What’s more, this scathing report opens up the possibility of some of the prison employees getting hit with criminal charges.

If you’ve ever been in prison or jail and you feel like your rights were violated, then it’s crucial that you get in touch with a criminal defense attorney about what happened. A good lawyer will help you better understand your legal rights. Considering how many citizens feel emotionally wrapped up in this case, it’s no surprise that tension has been on the rise as the case continues to move forward.

As stress remains high, employees arriving at a New York courthouse were surprised and nervous when they discovered an unexpected envelope marked “Alvin” in a mailroom. They also found that the letter contained a powdery substance.

In response, they immediately contacted the New York Police Department. On March 24th, emergency units rushed out to the courthouse to determine whether the powdery substance was safe or not. Authorities identified that the envelope was likely intended for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. This individual is currently a prosecutor who is seeking to levy charges against former President Trump.

After looking into the envelope, authorities discovered a threatening letter. The powder substance was taken into a lab for testing, but it was determined to be safe in an initial field test.

Investigators claim that hours prior to finding the envelope, Trump posted onto social media, telling his followers that charges against him could lead to “death and destruction.” Considering that tension is unlikely to simmer down, security has been increased in and around the court buildings in New York. New metal barricades have been installed on sidewalks, and authorities have several bomb sniffing dogs sweeping the nearby buildings regularly.

Criminal Political Threats

Considering the divisive political atmosphere, it’s no surprise that so many individuals are getting swept up in the emotional aspects of this ongoing case. It’s very important, however, to keep in mind the severity of any type of criminal political threat that you make.

Clearly, sending a threatening letter containing a strange powder could be considered a criminal offense. Other actions, like posting a threat on social media, can also be considered a criminal offense. Depending on the exact type of threat you commit, you could potentially face several years in prison. That’s because prosecutors could charge you with crimes like menacing, making verbal threats of physical violence, aggravated harassment, or even making a terroristic threat.

Since this recent incident revolved around a powdery substance, the perpetrator could potentially face terroristic threat charges.

If you’re being accused of making a political threat, then it’s important to get in touch with an attorney ASAP. Schedule a consultation with our office now to talk about your situation in more detail with our lawyers.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, these individuals have all directed criminal activities, including some instances of murder, in not only the U.S. but also in Mexico, El Salvador, and other countries. This string of criminal activity has been ongoing for at least the past 20 years based on investigations.

Currently, the 13 individuals are facing multiple charges including conspiracy to provide or conceal material support to terrorists, narco-terrorism conspiracy, and racketeering conspiracy.

Four of the reported gang leaders also are being charged with a conspiracy to smuggle aliens resulting in a death. With these specific charges, the four individuals could receive the death penalty if convicted. These four individuals were all taken into custody at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.

Authorities are still seeking four other individuals, but the rest of the suspects are all in custody in El Salvador. They are awaiting extradition.

Prosecutors say every one of these individuals held leadership roles within the gang, and they’ve all directed violence against other individuals. In El Salvador, it’s suspected that the individuals operated a military-style training camp to train other members of the gang. The camp reportedly had firearms, explosives, and other concerning weapons. All of this was also used to threaten and intimidate civilian populations in the area.

Criminal Gang Activities

Clearly, violence and gang-related activities will be prosecuted by the U.S. government even if they have to extradite you from a different country. What’s more, you can be sure that any criminal sentence you receive if convicted will be much more severe if you’re a suspected gang member than if you aren’t suspected of being a part of a gang.

As explained above, some gang-related activity could lead you to commit murder or even direct someone else to commit murder. In these situations, you could potentially face the death penalty if you get convicted. Even if you are able to avoid the death penalty, you’ll still likely spend an entire lifetime behind bars.

If you’ve been accused of committing a crime and you’re also being accused of being a gang member, then it’s in your best interests to hire a lawyer as soon as possible.

If you’re in New York or a surrounding area, then we invite you to schedule a consultation with our team to discuss your situation in more detail with our experts.
