The Scholarship

The Contest
Eligibility for participation requires that applicants be planning on attending an American college or university in the upcoming semester. To apply, applicants must submit a 500-word essay on this subject.
The Subject
America was built on a foundation of social justice. It is a tradition that shows no indication of decline.
Frequently, activists are scooped up by law enforcement, tried and held for years — sometimes decades — and their name slowly slips from public memory. Think of:
Barret Brown- Leonard Peltier
- Sister Megan Rice
Often, activists who have helped alter the social justice landscape were incarcerated before they went on to impact the nation.
These individuals include:
- MLK
- Emma Goldman
- Henry David Thoreau
In writing your essay, you will identify an individual who is currently imprisoned for their activism because they wanted to make the world a better place.
The person you choose must have a history of activism prior to incarceration. Your essay may include the activist’ chosen cause, to give their story context, but the substance should be about the activist: their background, their cause, why they got incarcerated, etc.
Scholarship Rules
Essays should be presented, as an attachment, to info@nyccriminallawyer.com by 7/15/2016. Be sure to include this information:
- Name, address, date of birth and phone number
- If under 18, include
parent’s email address - Name of the college or university to be attended, and
- The course of study that you will be following
Our staff will evaluate submissions, and the winner will be announced by 8/1/2016. The winning essay will be based on:
- Substance and originality
- Demonstrated potential for success in their field of study
- Writing quality
