Here’s a pretty interesting, great-sounding (and nearly 10-minute-long, be warned…) video of Earth, the band that was once upon a time a sludge/drone metal pioneer. They seem to be going in some wonderful directions and opening up the sound quite a bit, even though the tempos are still very, very, very slow. Their website also notes that they’ve recorded with Bill Frisell, the great and unconventional guitarist whose recent stuff, both with Lucinda Williams and as a solo artist on his record The Willies, has really been beautiful.
I love the ambient hum and sizzling weirdness that starts at about 3:50 as the first piece stops and the full band comes up. Spooky! By the way, I’m pleased to see that The War On Drugs got quite a strong review yesterday on Pitchfork. Well deserved. I wrote about those guys in May.
